May 2023 – Canoe / Kayak Trip

Event Details: Canoeing and kayaking on the James River, southwest of Richmond

Uniform: Class B uniform for traveling to/from

What to bring/Notes: Please pack a sandwich / meal for the trip down on Friday evening. Cracker Barrel will be served at camp, but you should plan to eat on the way down. Check the weather forecast. Since the highlight of the event will be held on the river, river appropriate clothing is essential.  That includes swimsuit, water shoes and sunscreen. Bring a small knapsack, recommend a water-proof contain to take your lunch (no glass), and sunscreen with you on the river. Optional items include swim trunks, short/long sleeve shirt and wide-brimmed hat.  Having a water bottle or two that can be tied to the watercraft is recommended.  This will be a fun paddle where all should plan to get wet.

Registration Deadline: 05/08/2023 before midnight

Cost Basis: $82 scouts, $82 adults.  This covers the cost of canoe/kayak rentals and river shuttle service ($40), campsite fees ($12/night), and food ($22).  Payments can be made online by credit card, by check or debited from the scout account with a positive balance.  Checks can be made to BSA Troop 964. Please indicate on your registration your method of payment.

Food Planning: Grubmasters should plan four meals at $4.50 per meal.  Meals will be Cracker Barrel Friday evening, Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner Saturday and Breakfast on Sunday. Saturday lunches should be packable to be taken on the trip.

Aquatics Safety: Adults participating are encouraged to complete BSA Safe Swim Defense and BSA Safety Afloat courses online (about 30 minutes each).  The courses can be found online in your my.scouting.org account.

Health & COVID Safety:

COVID Safety:  In light following the latest CDC, state, local, and Charter Org guidance on the COVID-19 restrictions, Troop 964 is updating its COVID-19 stance to the following:

  • Masks are no longer required for outdoor gatherings.  Wearing a mask is OK.
  • Social distancing requirements are no longer applicable at outdoor gatherings.
  • Boys will wash hands and use hand sanitizer when handling shared tools/utensils.
  • Scouts/family members who have symptoms or have been around someone with symptoms of COVID-19 in the past 14 days should not attend.
  • Scouts should “BE PREPARED” and carry a mask at all times in the event one is needed.

Cellphone Policy: Cell phones are a prohibited item as per troop policy.  Per troop policy, the troop will allow cell phones to be used during the car ride to the event and the car ride home.  Troop 964 will not be responsible for lost, stolen, or broken cell phones.  Cell Phones can be collected upon arrival at camp and locked in a lockbox in the troop trailer for the duration of the event.  Scouts will not have access to their cell phones for the duration of the event unless granted permission from the Scoutmaster, or an Assistant Scoutmaster for use in completing a scouting related activity.  Parents and scouts not in agreement with this policy should refrain from attending this troop event.

Scout Behavior: Please discuss with your scout that living up to the Scout Oath and Law is expected at all Troop 964 Events or event attended with Troop 964. Troop 964 will not tolerate harassment of any kind.  Unit Leaders will have a (1) strike policy.  Parents will be contacted to pick up their scout if any behavior issues are encountered.  This is non-negotiable.
