Boy Scouts of America Prepared for Life

April 2024 – Trout-O-Ree

From the Event Organizers:

On the weekend of April 5-7, the Scouts of the Prince William, Patriot, and Sully Districts will head to the Trout-O-Ree. Trout Town, the mythical piscatorial municipality, will rematerialize to show you a world of fishing fun! Trout Heritage Day events will be held on Saturday morning at the Rose River pavilions. And don’t forget our own Fishing Derby, Conservation Merit Badge Midway, and … a climbing wall!? Stay safe, live the Outdoor Code, and have a fishing adventure!

When:  April 5th to April 7th, 2024

Where: Graves Mountain Lodge – Syria, VA

Directions: Take I-66 West to Route 29 South at Gainesville. Stay on Route 29 South until 7 miles south of Culpeper. Take a right on to Route 609. Stay on Route 609 for 9 miles. Take a right on Route 231 North. Travel 1/2 mile and take a left on Route 670. Travel 4 miles until you see the Scouts directing you to the camping area across the road from Graves Mountain Lodge.

Departure Details: We will meet on Friday at FUPCDC at 4:30 PM. We’ll be loading Troop gear, chuck boxes, water, and personal gear into the trailer before departure. The plan is to leave FUPCDC no later than 5:30 PM. Scouts should eat dinner before arriving or bring something to eat along the way.

Return Details: We anticipate returning on Sunday between 11 AM and 12 PM. An email will be sent to the Troop roster approximately 60 minutes before our arrival with an update.

Event Details:

For Scouts looking to earn fishing merit badge, the event organizers suggest completing as many requirements as possible before arriving. They will be reviewing requirements 1, 2, 5, and 6. They will discuss requirements 4, 7, and 8. Please practice your knots (requirement 4) before arriving. There is no need to register ahead of time for fishing merit badge.

For Scouts looking to earn the fly fishing merit badge, please send Mr. Steudle an email. There are limited spots. Fly fishing is an ALL-DAY program on Saturday. Fishing merit badge is recommended before taking fly fishing merit badge.

There are 4 bodies of water for Scouts to catch trout including two rivers, a pay pond, and a catch & release pond. Scouts over 16 WILL NEED a fishing license with a trout stamp (this can be purchased online or at a sporting goods store).

For Scouts that plan to fish, you need to bring a rod, reel, and tackle. Catching trout does NOT require heavy-duty a pole – you’ll want a rod labeled “light or ultra-light action.” For the line, 6lb test is a good choice and smaller hooks (size 6 or 8). You can bring bobbers and weights if you’d like. Worms from the garden work great for bait.

Other items to note – there will be a handful of conservation merit badges offered for Scouts that do not want to fish. Details aren’t yet available on what badges are being offered. We’ll update this when available. There’s also going to be an archery range and gaga ball pit.

Uniform: Class B Uniforms for travel on Friday and Sunday. Scouts are also encouraged to wear class B’s during the day on Saturday. Class A uniforms are mandatory for the campfire program on Saturday night, and the Scout’s Own service on Sunday.

What to bring: See your Scout Handbook for a comprehensive list. Don’t forget to pack a flashlight, a mess kit, and toiletries. This is Early April in the mountains – Scouts should be prepared for cold weather in the morning and evening.

Event Open to: Scouts / Adults Registered with the Troop

Registration Deadline: Sunday, March 24th at 9 PM

Registration Fee: $45 per person – this includes the event registration and a grubmaster budget of $4.50 per meal (Sat B/L/D and Sun B) plus Friday’s Troop Cracker Barrell.
